It will be interesting to see if there is an effect on fish populations, and possibly more importantly if the effect is considered when considering CPUE. This is interesting in terms of a new discipline, "planetary health". What is happening now is hopefully a wake up call for the human race to reduce the locust effect and move [further] towards more sustainable consumption. British Ecological Society nature theguardian.com/environment/20…

Marine Protected Areas(MPAs) are a proven tool for the protection & restoration of the marine environment. But what, if any, spatial target should be set? 10% by 2020, 30% by 2030, 50% by 2050? Read more in our April newsletter #MarinePlanning #OurOcean mailchi.mp/7e51d6d8c8a5/s…

Delighted to see that the UK Government has concluded that marine protected areas are not only a good thing, but that we should have more of them! gov.uk/government/new…

The post mortem is underway of the rare Sowerby's beaked whale that died in Wicklow over the weekend. We are hoping that this examination will help us understand more about the biology of these deep diving whales. Thanks to Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and Dept of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for their help.

To achieve an ecologically coherent network of MPAs we need to designate the species and habitat gaps in our seas. Over the next few weeks we'll be taking a look at some of these species and habitats. Check out some of the factsheets here: nimtf.org/marine-protect…

Another deep diving species reported stranded to the IWDG. This time Waterville, Co Kerry. Looks like a Sowerby's beaked whale in very poor nutritive condition. Photos by David O'Connell.

This completely unregulated activity has the potential to drastically impact feeding opportunities for many marine species in Irish waters. It is a real shame to see this act overturned. theskipper.ie/high-court-ove…

This is interesting. With the current uptake of addressing 'blue carbon' it will be interesting to see if these microplastic sinks inhibit carbon sequestration. Ulster Wildlife @seadeepni @MarPAMM_project mdpi.com/2673-1924/2/1/…
