Ben McCombe Not to change the subject or anything, but out of curiosity, why do you think Australia's per capita GDP has grown only 15% since the financial crisis, while America's has grown by almost 30%?

Hard classes are not torture for the strongest students. They are thrilling. “Torture” for you is essential training for tomorrow’s top scientists. Completely insane to dumb things down so that average students can pretend they are as good as the best.

You’d have seen far more death and life than people today. You’d face danger from animals, rival groups, disease, childbirth, famine. You’d live inside a dense web of kin, obligations, rituals, and seasonal cycles. The emotional bandwidth required to survive that world was

This is a big deal. First instance I'm aware of of an unassisted proof of a specified, non-trivial mathematical theorem, followed by formal verification of the proof. AIs can do real mathematics now. I think the future belongs to software like this being steered by human

In uni my ferrous metallurgy professor on the first lecture said that it's the most retarded branch of chemistry 'cause it adds carbon to iron oxide to remove oxygen. And then it tries to remove the excess carbon by blasting it with oxygen. I still think about this. Great teacher

I used to TA for organic chemistry to premeds and one time the professor asked us to rotate all of the molecules on the quizzes by 90 or 180 degrees randomly and started cackling It was a bloodbath. Anyway read the FDA letter on what doctors did with vaccine mandates

Congratulations to both Ted and Alex on this, they've both been very influential on my thinking. But more than that, there is a larger group of people who know they are basically right about the whole big picture and just don't want to say it — but boldness has real value.

We might actually defeat HIV in just one generation! Lenacapavir is almost 100% effective at preventing HIV, and all it takes is two shots a year, that activists negotiated a $40/year generic deal for people to obtain. New HIV cases might just end!

The “tawny owl” referred to here is in fact the Tawny Frogmouth. A very common bird found all over Australia. There is no conservation basis for opposing this development.

Retro Bio is a headscatcher. The lead program is an autophagy enhancer in GLP studies? Earlier programs are iPSCs for Alzheimer's? Raising $1B at a $5B valuation? Holy cow crazy. The probability that this works out for investors is near zero.
