I'll tell you something that's true: Most teachers *hate* differentiation because they know, through experience, that it is not possible to do well or to do fairly.

1/3 I love this quote from Scott Hill about balance. I've learned to be cautious about calls for balance or "we're all on the same side" language. Why would we aim for a balance between good instruction and bad instruction? Let's just focus on using good instruction.

🚨 Kids deserve teachers with strong foundations! My colleagues & I have a PETITION to reverse the removal of math, science, geography, English, French & history requirements for MB teacher certification. If you agree, sign now & share widely! 📚✍️chng.it/nXSWYRLVLf #mbpoli

Anna Stokke Jesse Gamble Dylan Wiliam Manitoba's NDP Wab Kinew The current PRESIDENTS of the Reading Recovery Council of North America AND the Cdn Institute of RR are both Manitobans who have held very high positions of influence & power within our Ed Department so much so that RR is written into our funding docs. Our context is important!

Carrie Wood Anna Stokke Jesse Gamble Dylan Wiliam Manitoba's NDP Wab Kinew Very important. And that influence has been entrenched for at least 25 years, regardless of who was/is in power. I truly believed this government would do better by education, but it is not looking great at the moment.

Despite being discredited, Reading Recovery is still used in Manitoba schools. Another example of Manitoba children being negatively impacted by the so-called 'experts'. Wab Kinew Tracy Schmidt @nello4transcona

Letter in today's Winnipeg Free Press from University of Manitoba prof Darja Barr. "The MB govt’s decision to eliminate all subject-area requirements for pre-service teachers is a big miss — from misinterpreted research, to misrepresented contexts, misguided policy and a misled public."

1/2 As a cautionary example, a University of Manitoba prof claimed "research shows" 15 times in a Winnipeg Free Press article to justify dropping subject requirements for MB teachers. We checked the research she cited—none supported the claims, most contradicted them. She influenced policy.

Direct instruction is joyful & leads pupils to success. Here is a *clip* where I use high frequency & high participation questioning in 3 phases: 1. Check for listening 2. Rehearsal 3. Check for understanding Established routines: all hands up, turn & talk, SLANT & ruler reading

Ahead of I Love to Read Month, I stopped by Winnipeg (w-i-n-i-p-e-g) Beach (b-ea-ch) School (s-k-oo-l). @Evergreen_SD has overhauled how it teaches kids to read w/ new back-to-basics lessons. The revamp is unfolding amid the “new reading wars" #mbed #wfp winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-life/…

Having teachers practice (ie group rehearsal) is the next frontier in PD. Also: wearing a warm hat while in an outdoor hot tub when it’s -20 in Manitoba, Canada is good advice … stops your hair from freezing fyi 👍

Yes, there are full school districts that are utilizing principles of effective, research based instruction and the science of learning.

This week included dinner with Anna Stokke and Scott Hill to discuss the state of math instruction - and let me tell you... it appears bleak until you visit Scott's school and realize a bit of commitment to Rosenshine can lead to quick gains! educationrickshaw.com/2024/06/09/s3e…
