There are a number of important insights from Ofsted’s latest English review and it’s worth reflecting on what’s going well and what needs to be done to improve outcomes for all young people.

Crucial funding for early years providers to support disadvantaged children has fallen since 2017/18⬇️

The next government should reinstate this funding to previous levels and review the early years pupil premium to ensure disadvantaged children get the support they need.

Compelling evidence. Research now shows that the first 8000 days of a child's development are important and given the destruction of early, middle childhood and youth services. A coherent, scaffolded series of interventions across all age groups is required to drive human capital

I'm coming late to this but just got to reading the full report. The findings don't surprise me at all because Sure Start Local Programmes were rooted in evidence & targeted in the poorest areas. But successive govts made two crucial errors (I was there, as a civil servant).

As part of the End Child Poverty Coalition, we handed in a giant unhappy birthday card to @Dwpgovuk to mark 7 years of the two-child limit to benefit payments.

In this election year, all parties must commit to scrapping this unfair sibling tax.

We all knew, those of us who benefitted personally, or who worked in schools with links to sure starts, or worked in the system could see the benefits every single day. Lives changed forever, in a good way. The destruction of sure start was utterly shameful and driven by ideology

Powerful and compelling report from Institute for Fiscal Studies on impact of Sure Start. Significant benefits in GSCE outcomes & reductions in EHCPs. On top of what we already know about savings on health, positive financial impact of Sure Start was huge.

Montessori programs for children ages 0-6 are radical:

> Babies sleep in floor beds, not cribs
> Toddlers use knives and prepare meals
> Preschoolers predominantly work alone

Why? It has everything to do with the child's nature & needs in the 'First Plane of Development':

Montessori believed there's a tempting, but mistaken, way to understand child development.

Without correcting this error, our approach to parenting & education does more than hold children back, it can warp them.

A kind of foot-binding for the soul.

The mistake goes like this:
