#OTD 1742 in Irish History, betrayed by an accomplice William Crotty the #waterford highwayman is executed. After his hanging his head was stuck on a pike as a warning to other outlaws. Legend states that his treasure still lies hidden in the Comeragh mountains.

#dublin 1836 the #waterford Mail reports the old tradition of Whipping the Herring at the end of lent has been carried out. Mummers take turns beating a dead fish on a stick before throwing him in the River, this marks the end of the lenten diet of fish amidst much rejoicing.

A relic of a time of filthy streets often covered in animal dung, some nice examples of boot scrappers around the streets of #Kilkenny and #waterford

One of my favourite smuggling stories is the ghost of Herstmonceux Castle. The ruined castle was a base for smugglers and the ghost was a luminous painted costume. The ghost would make occasional appearances to ensure no one approached the castle. Very much a Scooby Doo vibe.

#otd in 1912 the RMS Titanic sank with the loss of nearly 1500 lives , one survivor was young Daniel Buckley from Cork who sought to make his fortune in America. Buckleys luck wouldn't last as he died in WW1 serving for his newly adopted country.

James "Sligo"Jameson and a fascination with Cannabilism. 1888 the heir to the distillery was travelling in the Congo & paid 5 handkerchiefs to a local tribe to witness Cannabilism. This act caused a international scandal with the heir later claiming he made the offer in jest.

Have decided to give Twitter another chance , this is a RIC whistle which I picked up during the week. The RIC had access to arms but often patrolled without them, carrying a whistle to summon help and a wooden truncheon.
