#OTD 1934 Antarctic explorer Carsten Borchgrevink died age 69. Borchgrevink was leader of the British Antarctic 'Southern Cross' Expedition 1898-1900. His huts at Cape Adare, cared for by AHT, are the world’s only remaining examples of humanity’s first dwellings on any continent.

🔊 Today marks International Day for Monuments and Sites! Also known as World Heritage Day, the aim is to promote awareness of the diversity of cultural heritage, the vulnerability of sites and monuments, and the efforts required for the protection and conservation of them.

Students at the Young Inspiring Explorers™ Summit last weekend were treated to a fantastic visit at the International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch. Students met huskies, rode in a Hägglund, visited Penguins, experienced the Storm Dome, and journeyed to the Ice in the 4D theatre. #inspire

#OTD 1800, Sir James Clark Ross, British naval officer and Polar explorer, was born. Ross commanded the 'Erebus' and 'Terror', Antarctic expeditions (1839–1843) discovering the Ross Sea in 1841, and also Victoria Land while sailing towards the position of the South Magnetic Pole.

#OTD 1873 Frank Wild was born in Yorkshire, England. He joined the Merchant Service in 1899 and Royal Navy in 1900 and had a key role in five Antarctic expeditions. Awarded the polar medal with four bars Wild was the most decorated polar explorer of the heroic age of exploration.
