#OTD 1930 Fridtjof Nansen, Norwegian explorer, renowned scientist, statesman, diplomat and humanitarian, died of a heart attack. Today, Nansen's old mansion, Polhøgda, is home to the Fridtjof Nansen Institute, with his office left largely untouched.

#OTD 1916, Ernest Shackleton, Frank Worsley, Tom Crean, John Vincent, Timothy McCarthy and Harry McNish reached South Georgia on the 'James Caird'. The voyage from Elephant Island where the crew of 'Endurance' were stranded - one of the greatest small-boat journeys in history!

#OTD 1967 Antarctic navigator John King Davis died. A master mariner for many Heroic Era expeditions including the role of Chief Officer on the 1907-09 British Antarctic 'Nimrod' Expedition and commanding 'Aurora' on the Ross Sea Relief Expedition to rescue the Ross Sea Party.

#OTD 1916, Victor Hayward and Aeneas Mackintosh were last seen as they left Hut Point intending to return to base at Cape Evans despite it being too early in the season for sea-ice to be solid. A search party found evidence the pair had been carried out to sea on an ice floe.

#OTD 1882 Australian geologist & explorer Sir Douglas Mawson was born in Shipley, Yorkshire, England. Part of Shackleton's 'Nimrod' Expedition, completing the longest manhauling sled journey of 122 days, reaching the south magnetic pole on 16 Janurary 1909.
