IOM’s Chief of Staff & Regional Director are in #Afghanistan to support our emergency response, as thousands of returnees cross the border from Iran each day. With needs rising fast, only 1 in 10 returnees who need assistance are receiving it. More resources are urgently needed.

IOM's Chief of Staff and Regional Director visited the Islam Qala border crossing to see firsthand the support provided to vulnerable Afghan returnees from Iran. They toured facilities and heard returnees' concerns. Since April 2025, over 1.3 million Afghans have returned.

Just visited IOM Afghanistan-supported Reception Center in Islam Qala, with #IOM Chief of Staff Mohammed Mohammed Abdiker. The scale of Afghans’ returns is staggering, arriving with so little, so tired. Urgent funding is needed to support dignified returns and sustainable reintegration.

IOM’s Chief of Staff & Regional Director met with EUinAfghanistan to discuss our ongoing partnership. EU support remains critical to delivering both emergency assistance & long-term recovery for hundreds of thousands of Afghans, especially women & vulnerable groups.

At the border, I saw families arriving with nothing; tired, scared and uncertain of their future. IOM and partners only have resources to support 1 in 10 who need urgent help. It is a situation no one should have to face. #Afghanistan should not be forgotten.

Over 4 million Afghans have returned from Iran & Pakistan since Sept 2023. 1.5 million in 2025 alone. IOM is sounding the alarm: without urgent support, aid systems risk collapse. Only 1 in 10 returnees are receiving aid. iom.int/ZfF

Among the tens of thousands returning to #Afghanistan daily are #pregnant women. At Islam Qala, UNFPA emergency maternity clinic—part of the IOM Afghanistan-led Border Consortium Reception Center—is providing life-saving care for those who can’t wait to reach final destination.

IOM’s Regional Director visited our transit centre in Herat, where we provide humanitarian post-arrival assistance to Afghans returning through the Islam Qala border.
