Maybe I've become too tolerant of my tolerance.

And maybe that's acceptance.

After all, I work with humans.

And, well, if tolerance and acceptance aren't part of the work, then what am I doing?

Our work is human work.

And, man, it's work.

I accept that.

There are not many things I oppose more than this. Read 'Bill to arm teachers advances in Tennessee in wake of deadly school shooting' on SmartNews: l.smartnews.com/p-BA99f/SAd5pD

Dennis Dill AKA Green Dragon Tom Whitby I want CTE & academics to work together. We should do that instead of living & working in our bubbles. Let's stop making excuses & dump useless content to create real problem solving opportunities for kids using math, science, social studies and language.

Susan Carriker Tom Whitby I don’t disagree with you but I am saying the concepts of time are different … CTE collaboration isn’t a 2 class period thing and both classes may not be doing something that meshes well.

Susan Carriker Dennis Dill AKA Green Dragon Tom Whitby There are real-world problems everyone faces, in every workplace, etc. I hear you saying this is reality, and that separating out college track v vocational track is actually a false separation in some ways

Dennis Dill AKA Green Dragon Tom Whitby but, that is my point. FIX THAT. We do NOT need to teach ONE thing at a time, teach each subject in isolation. The world doesn't work that way and SCHOOL SHOULDN'T EITHER. If we change it, it can mesh well.

Harvey Alvy ASCA ASCD but, now the kids going into some of these programs are coming out debt free, with good jobs and salaries and benefits comparable to those of their teachers! Times have changed... Colleges haven't kept up. Those CTE programs are looking better and better

In reality soft borders, or no borders, should exist between academic & vocational programs. Too much specialization limits an organization's ability to innovate and flourish. For example, for a climate change initiative to succeed expertise on many levels is needed.

Plus in many cases, isn't it possible to transfer courses from a trade school or community college to a four-year university? And that's nothing new!

When the comprehensive HS was organized in the early 1900s academic AND vocational programs were highlighted.Unfortunately affluent students took 'college prep' while new immigrant & minority students were encouraged to only take vocational classes. ASCA ASCD

the one thing that is NOT working is the coordination between academics & career tech. The time for collaboration is NOW. The core academic teachers and leaders NEED to work with industry and CTE teachers to redesign our courses to SUPPORT what they are doing.

This week during we're looking at post-secondary options other than university education. What strategies can schools and communities use to help students find careers that are a good fit for them?

the future is skills training & job placement. There will still be a college track for some, but that should not be the primary focus of secondary ed. Kids need opportunity to explore careers and find their passion. Getting into a college should not be the only goal

Our career and technical program offered training and job placement in HVAC, culinary arts and partnered with a local shipyard to provide training (welding and more) and kids got excellent jobs right out of High School

Thanks Susan, the Health Science example is a great option beyond the traditional college pathway, since students can earn credits right away.
