Just learned Bobby Unser completed only 3 laps in his first 2 Indianapolis 500 starts.

In his 2nd start in 1964, he was involved in the catastrophic Lap 2 crash that claimed the lives of Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald.

As a Rookie, he crashed in Turn 1 on Lap 3.

On this day in 1978, Dan Wheldon was born. He went on to become a two-time Indy 500 winner and the 2005 Indycar series champion. He claimed 16 Indycar victories plus the 2006 24 Hours of Daytona.
