If you've also used worksheets to teach your students math, then I've recorded a webinar you'll want to check out. It's called Why We Should Reconsider Using Worksheets (And What We Should Be Doing Instead), with K-5 & 6-12 versions.

The racial trouble (among many troubles) w/ discipline programs that reward 'good' behavior: research shows that educators interpret behavior differently depending on students' race. If we don't fix that, at least part of what we're rewarding is whiteness.

I love watching for teachable moments as kids play. Kinders organically engaged in sorting and patterning when playing with keva planks and animal characters.

We’ve really been stretching our teacher brains to think about supporting students in conjecturing. Check out these 6th grade ideas and how we might be in route to discovering some important arithmetic properties.

Check out all the creative ways 5th graders created equations and expressions representing unknowns prior to “formal” variable instruction 😍

We decided to do some learning about conjectures in 1st grade this week! We started by conjecturing about Scrat the Squirrel from Ice Age and then tried the same with some math. “If you add one, the number becomes the next number” and more early ideas. Such cool 6/7 yo minds.

Yes… even elementary students! I had a convo with a 4th grader on how we could support them yesterday . It’s not just food and drink either. Have convos!!

Problems that don't exist:
(1) children who don't want to learn
(2) a culture or mindset of poverty
(3) communities that don't value education
(4) educational disparities caused by an entire group's shortage of 'grit.'
Let's not use energy fixing problems that don't exist.

How amazing are these 6th graders? Looking at patterns across contexts and models to test conjectures about integer operations 😍

Why is it, when we’re told that we have to prepare children for the ‘real world’ it always means making them do unpleasant things? It means making them get up early every morning, or wear clothes they hate. 1/
