🧵 The Asim Ghafoor case is a frightening one w/ possible far-reaching consequences for US Muslims. The UAE arrested a U.S. citizen in transit thru Dubai, accusing him of tax evasion *in the US*. UAE claims they did so w/US help which Department of State denied Pay attention.

Whether Ghafoor is guilty of financial crimes is irrelevant: a Muslim civil rights attorney - w/a history of fighting policies criminalizing Muslims, who was spied on by his govt & had zero criminal charges in the US - was arrested by an ally claiming U.S. request & involvement.

So, what precedence is being set here - especially for the safety, abroad, of those US Muslims who are vocal critics of US policies at home & abroad? There is a lot riding on this case as it continues to involve & ignoring it is truly at our own peril.

After our advocacy, Virginian Asim Ghafoor has been released from detention in the UAE. I’m pleased to see this situation resolved expediently and will continue to push for the safety of Americans detained abroad, including Brittany Griner.
