Needle and thread grass, also known as spear grass to some, definitely lives up to its name! Trinie with Alberta Conservation accumulated quite the collection of seed heads during a day of range surveys recently.

We are a peak bird #AB. Our woodlots and bushes are alive every morning with 100s of millions of migrating birds. Most are sneaky but rewarding to catch a glimpse. From this AM: Red-eyed Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Wilson's Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler

This morning's #YYC bird wave was a tsunami of songbird migrants. This Red-eyed Vireo was one of many vireos & wood warblers that were hitting the first sun soaked foliage of the new day. These are great days, so plan to head out to check your local green patch.

Calgary Urban Species Response Team (CUSRT) Kyle Brittain It’s what you call a “hive of activity”😳. some sweet day-old donuts were in a plastic bag that was ripped open, and the wasps were enjoying an unlimited smorgasbord. Not bothering anyone. Good for them. Can’t forget that they’ve done a great job on all of our aphids!

So when Thirteen-lined Groud Squirrel dig their burrows, where does all the soil go? Their dens are moundless holes in the ground.

A memorable #AB time with toads digging in for the fall. We were thrilled to watch both Plains Spadefoot & Great Plains Toads youngsters dig down into the soil to enter suspended animation. If it doesn't rain, they could be down there for years!

We are starting to see a bit of movement of Prairie Rattlesnakes returning to their hibernacula near Alberta's large prairie river valleys. They often pause on warm roads where things can go wrong. We rescued this one and placed it in the river side ditch.
