A more local view on the transfer of #BarcombeBridge into the sympathetic ownership of East Sussex Highways.
Why does this public body recognise the structure as a community asset whilst National Highways viewed it as a liability to get rid of?
Simple answer: culture.

A rare archive view of the fabulous skewed masonry arch bridge carrying Rudgate over the former Church Fenton-Harrogate railway, now the focus of National Highways' retrospective planning application.
The scene today is something of a contrast.
We must value our historical assets.
Great piece on #RudgateBridge from Construction Index, examining National Highways' attempt to secure retrospective planning application for its unnecessary 'emergency' infilling scheme.
Repairs to a nearby fence were needed.

We're really pleased to see BBC Sussex covering the #BarcombeBridge ownership transfer so extensively - on TV, on radio and online.
Anyone would think people are interested in our great railway heritage!

Great news for the local community that #BarcombeBridge is going to be sympathetically repaired, any residual threat of National Highways' £246K emergency infill scheme having finally been lifted.
And the weight limit will remain at 20 tonnes too.

The start date has been confirmed for the public inquiry which will decide the future of #ConghamBridge .
Will this early and rare-surviving example of a modular concrete structure remain buried in National Highways' emergency infill or be exhumed so we can appreciate it again?
Great to see East Sussex Highways engaging positively with the local community over #BarcombeBridge . In developing a repair scheme, the Council intends to maintain the structure's 'historic aesthetics' AND current 20t weight limit.
Are you watching National Highways? That's how you do it.
Great to have SAVEBritainsHeritage voicing its objection to the loss of #RudgateBridge to National Highways 'emergency' infill scheme.
We need to respect our railway history and protect these structures so they can be part of a better future.
Time for NH to accept that reality or step away.
We understand that ownership of the much-valued bridge at Barcombe, East Sussex has been transferred to East Sussex Highways.
In 2021, it was the focus of a vigorous community campaign to prevent it being infilled by National Highways.
This move should fully lift any residual threat.
We've just submitted our objection to National Highways' attempt to retain its unnecessary and unlawful 'emergency' infill at #RudgateBridge .
