Impressive double jet pattern over Eurasia over the past weeks. In our recent Nature Communications paper we show how positive trends in this pattern made Western Europe a #heatwave hotspot. @syn_efou Dim Coumou Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK Columbia Climate School Climate Analytics nature.com/articles/s4146…

New publication! 🎉 Based on analysis of literature and a global assessment of historic cases, we show how drought can affect flood risk. We also assess under which circumstances drought-to-flood interactions can lead to increased or decreased risk. 1/5 …elibrary-wiley-com.vu-nl.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.10…

One of the most ominous risks for Europe is that of a major change in Atlantic ocean currents. Recent science suggests it has been greatly underestimated in the past -including by me, having worked on it for over 30 years. Here my half-hour presentation in Vilnius a week ago!

Increasing temperatures cause the humidity of the air to also increase. As the air contains more water, when it rains, it rains more. This 'causal chain' is clearly observed in changes to UK climate, leading to more intense rainfall, increasing the risk of local flooding.

Here is, where we used to have lunch during European Geosciences Union from #EGU05 to #EGU24, talking about heavy precipitation and flooding in a warming climate for nearly two decades...

New study comparing an ensemble of 16 ice-flow models: if we continue with increasing emissions, we'll cause meters of global sea level rise. Up to 7 meters (!) by year 2300. Open acces paper: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/20…
