Someone doesn't understand predation and not just from coyotes or other small mammals. Hawks, owls, and eagles will also take out a flock. Most meat birds are a hybrid, meaning they are 2 different bird breeds that create the Vantross X which grows really fast. They are pretty

Anti-chemical activists keep saying the same thing: 'Big Ag' pushes 'GMOs' purely to hook farmers on pesticides and boost profits. It’s a popular narrative. But it’s completely nonsensical.🧵

Pop Ecology #27: “Weeds tell you what’s wrong with your soil.” Reality: Some weeds can hint at compaction/drainage/pH, but weeds mostly reflect seedbank + management history. If it grows crops, it can grow weeds, no matter how healthy it is.

This is so wrong on so many levels. Yes you can reduce your inputs but not for every crop. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Jodi DeHate “Regenerative agriculture” has become a buzzword—ill-defined, yet held up as the silver bullet for every challenge facing the food system. For many, it’s positioned as the antidote to corporate agriculture they so readily criticize. Too often, its loudest proponents have the

If you know a major storm is coming, have a handful of livestock but no generator to have adequate water supply in case the power goes out to water said animals, wouldn't you think you should get one before a storm hits? Things I see on Facebook that drive me nuts .

Seeing all these folks that want to garden. Couple of things to start with: 1. Soil test. Know what your soil needs . 2. Amend the pH 3. Use proven seeds 4. Grow easy veggies the first year. 5.Have a plan to deal with weeds and bugs.

Why is conservation adoption is so slow in agriculture? It’s not ignorance. It’s economics…& time. A lot of farmers aren’t just farming anymore; they’re working off-farm, running side hustles, doing whatever it takes to stay afloat. Conservation takes management. It takes

Yep I made an inaccurate post today and it was a doozy. My bad. But I was partially right. Lawns and turf (golf courses) are the largest irrigated "crop" in the US. Just not the largest crop in the US.

Funny how the loudest critics of modern ag fixate on how food is grown, vilifying methods or chemistries, preaching organic halos 😇 and chemical bans 🚫, yet never seem to notice the shaky science (poor methods) behind studies that echo their world views.

The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) “Dirty Dozen” report once again villainizes safe, healthy, and affordable fruits and vegetables by misrepresenting U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) pesticide data. bit.ly/4tnvn8U

Listen up, chemophobes: the benefits of eating fruits and veggies absolutely crush any tiny trace of pesticides. 🙄 Skipping produce just because you're scared of a few molecules? Congrats, you're voluntarily making yourself less healthy. Eat the Dirty Dozen. It's fine. I promise

Everyone seems to be an expert on how to deal with dams that are about to be overrun. For context, parts of Michigan received over 5 inches of rain in the last 7 days, plus all the snowmelt. Good news is the state in no longer on the drought monitor!

Jodi DeHate (@farmchicjodi) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Oh the joys of having an old house. The wooden front door has swelled with all the humidity from days of rain and snowmelt. It doesn't open or close like it should. Our bedroom window cracked horizontally in the last month but we only discovered it yesterday when we opened it.

Jodi DeHate (@farmchicjodi) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I think this is a first. All counties in Michigan are under a flood watch. All 83 !! Roads are washing out. Several dams are about to fail. It's not good and we have 2 more nights of rain to go.
