We'd add that services need to understand root causes of distress in people's lives, and employers need support to create mentally healthy working conditions.

This looks like a fab opportunity

This scale outlines understandable human responses to life. These may be exacerbated by trauma or circumstance. Most of us will relate to these at some point.

We need to stop pathologising human emotions and trauma, and hiding experiences behind labels that create stigma.

If more people hand in sick notes due to struggling with their mental health, we shouldn't pretend it's because people don't want to work.

Given a genuine choice, no-one chooses to have their mental health affect their work.

Let’s not use people struggling with mental illness as a way of detracting from the truth. We need thriving communities, accessible services, eradication of poverty, we know what works. Those who carry the risk of this policy are the most vulnerable - is this who we are?
