People have donated about $60,000 on behalf of the two climbers involved in last week’s fatal accident in Alaska. Robbi Mecus, an Adirondack forest ranger, died in the accident. Melissa Orzechowski survived the fall, though was critically injured.

It felt very important to spend time out in the Adirondacks today, a place that Forest Ranger Robbi Mecus loved so deeply and worked tirelessly to serve.

Robbi told me in 2021 that she “instantly fell in love,” with the ADKs on her first trip here decades ago.

UPDATE: Robbi Mecus, an Adirondack forest ranger who died in a climbing accident in Alaska on Thursday, was climbing with Melissa Orzechowski.
Orzechowski, 30, who was critically injured in the fall. had recently moved to California from the Adirondacks.

Deeply saddened by the news of Forest Ranger Robbi Mecus's death. She left a mark on everyone she met, including me.
She was open and vulnerable with me as I worked on telling her story for NCPR and @npr in 2021. And was a valuable source ever since.
