A white stork seen this morning in the wildspace. One seen last year flying over but this one was on the ground. Looking at the rings it might be a release from Knepp. Photo Duncan Poyser

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen in Ely?? How about a kookaburra... don’t laugh at me, I’m serious!! Apparently one was seen in Whittlesey last week so likely the same bird. If so it’s flying the wrong way if it’s wants to go home 😂😂😂

Ely bird race today. Three groups braved the cold to find as many species as possible around Ely Wildspace: aka Roswell Pit. A winning score of 68 and an aggregate of 72 species were recorded. Some omissions were Fiedfare and Gadwall which seemed odd, we knew they were out there!

Volunteers have plugged the gap in the hedge by erecting a much more sturdy fence. Hopefully this will deter cows, dogs and people from wandering through the flood meadow. Leaving the birds and wildlife in peace.
