Wes Streeting is pinning his hopes on new technology to keep us healthy. But attention to inequalities and a focus on the social determinants of health are likely to achieve more for a greater number of people—and at a lower cost, says @HelenRSalisbury bmj.com/content/387/bm…

Despite the recent government rhetoric about the importance of NHS primary care, the bulk of NHS investments announced in the budget were for specialist and diagnostic services. General practices may end up worse off because of this and the increase in employer NI contributions.

Incredible report - Five companies are responsible for over 80% of TV ads for snacks and confectionary aired before the watershed - despite claiming not to advertise to children. >4 million people working in the food sector earn below the Real Living Wage. Do read and share.

Conflicts of interest: moving towards zero tolerance - My editorial in the BMJ with Rebecca Coombes Nigel Rollins from World Health Organization (WHO). Multiple industries pay doctors, academics, charities, and policy makers to distort science and harm public health. 🧵 bmj.com/content/387/bm…

Social media interventions as a public health strategy face important limitations. Diet and exercise-based social media interventions should be used with awareness of the potential negative impact on psychological health, body image and disordered eating. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/01…

The Taliban has just banned Afghan women from attending nursing school. Imagine: you cannot pursue any education, even healthcare, because of the sole reason that you are a woman. We are witnessing the erasure of women in real-time. It is beyond horror.

I had a conversation today about the difference between "kindness" & "niceness" in leadership so I decided to post about it. The article & graphic explain why, as leaders, we should choose kindness over niceness. Kindness is about caring enough to push people toward greatness,

When discussing health inequalities, please use terms such as “under-represented” or “under-served” rather than “hard to reach” when referring to communities most at risk of poor health outcomes. These groups do want to be reached and access good quality NHS care easily.
