The first thing the new leader of the Conservative Party needs to do is sack Claire Coutinho. She had her shot as Energy Secretary and blew it big time - weakening climate policies and underplaying the economic and security benefits of action, contributing to electoral disaster

Coal is the largest source of power generation worldwide – & the single biggest source of CO2 emissions from energy In a new video, International Energy Agency’s Carlos Fernández Alvarez discusses how coal is used in today's energy system & why reducing its emissions is vital to reach climate goals 👇

Some dodgy claims about North Sea oil & gas circulating in the media today, thanks to an open letter co-ordinated by Offshore Energies UK Two main points I'd like to debunk, nicely summarised by OEUK chief David Whitehouse on BBC Radio 4 Today this morning... 🧵

Energy price cap rises 10%: £150 for the average household bill. a quick 🧵: bills have come down since the peak of the crisis but are higher than they were in 2021, and with the end of government support we can see households struggling - and that was before this new rise.

The reason the net zero back tracking was so devastating at the election was because the Tory government lost the support of those who respect Sir David Attenborough. He called for urgent action to tackle the crisis . Rishi Sunak slowed it down. At that point he lost the country

Sage advice from Juliet Phillips here. Labour has to find a way to be bolder on energy investment and reform - and fast. businessgreen.com/news/4350935/f…

Fuel poverty has not reduced "to any meaningful extent" in 5 years, says Government Committee. Of course it hasn't - look what the Conservatives did to schemes to make homes cheaper to heat.

It is nuts that licenses were issued by Tory gov for these oil and gas fields without considering the climate impact of the emissions from their use. That was putting profits for fossil fuel industry ahead of long term human survival - this is good news bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

New poll from ECIU shows staggering ignorance about benefits of electric vehicles among petrol car drivers - this has been driven be deliberate disinformation peddled by some newspapers like Daily Mail & Telegraph & Express & The Sun and social media eciu.net/media/press-re…

North Sea basin in decline anyway so this report is highly misleading. Plus - what is economic cost of countries extracting all the oil and gas which has been discovered - it runs into the trillions if climate change is fully unleashed theguardian.com/business/artic…

Will solar PV soon be the cheapest source of electricity in most places around the world? This Nature Communications paper says yes. Most surprisingly this is AFTER including short- and long-term storage costs for renewable energy sources. nature.com/articles/s4146…

When UK closes its last coal power plant this month, it will be a story of remarkable transition from drawing 40% power from coal to none - all in 10 years. We can transition away from natural gas as well.

Will Tories learn the lessons of Grenfell?: “David Cameron boasted of cutting red tape, and he should not be surprised if the culture he presided over and the so-called ‘bonfire of regulations’ contributed to turning people’s homes into actual bonfires.” theguardian.com/uk-news/articl…

We are entering a new technological age where it will be possible to have a 100% renewables power system which is energy secure by using batteries, flexing demand and long term green hydrogen storage. Nuclear power stations will be more expensive.
