Excited to join GCRC on a cruise to map unsurveyed regions of the seafloor in NW Greenland! Fingers crossed for calm seas and plentiful glacial landforms!

Thanks to NERC Arctic Office Natural Environment Research Council for a UK-Greenland Bursary to support this collaboration 🇬🇧 🇬🇱 🚢 🌊

A brilliant first CORR-NE conference yesterday! 55 researchers from north-east universities presented their work on the cold regions. The quality of posters was exceptionally high and great to see everyone getting to know each other.

Fitting that this was recorded on the publication date of our new nature study on rapid ice-sheet retreat.

Are such pacific temp anomalies a forewarning of El Niño to come? This could have important (& scary) implications for West Antarctica if so …

Thank you to everyone who has sent congratulations about our new paper (& kind words about my press, tv & radio activities!) - I’m genuinely touched by the support. Now in the Lake District for a break from work, although I’m sure some glacial landforms will catch my eye ⛰🥾🧊

A new study shows an ancient ice sheet retreated at a startling 2,000 feet per day, shedding light on how quickly ice in Antarctica could melt and raise global sea levels in today’s warming world. wapo.st/3m6BqSh

Ice sheets can collapse at 600 metres a day, far faster than feared, study finds

- Sediments from last ice age provide ‘warning from the past’ for Antarctica and sea level rise today, say scientists Christine Batchelor et al
