In rivers, coastal waters or seas, algal blooms form a 'shroud of death' - smothering shellfish & invertebrates, starving birds that eat them.

Caused by excess nitrogen or phosphate, data suggests in rural areas, agriculture is the main source of these, in towns, sewage.
