A significant moment for Defence:

➡️ £75bn increase in defence spending between now & 2030

➡️ Supporting Ukraine with our largest package yet & an additional £500m this year

➡️ Immediate focus on munitions, industry & tech

➡️ Enables defence to invest even more in our people

Huge announcement. Of course there's an argument for more or sooner but that would be churlish response to biggest uplift in my lifetime. This will transform MOD's finances, allow UK defence industry to confidently scale up, & make our frontline forces more lethal & sustainable.

The PM has put the UK defence industry on a 'war footing' & plans to lift defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030. But, in the small print, the only new cash this year is £500mln for Ukraine - not UK military. Everything else is after the election (or not)

Details to follow clearly, but it’s an old promise being delivered rather late and without the certainty of seeing it through. It would be nice to see where and how this is going to be spent, but Ukraine and everything supporting them has to be the immediate priority now 1/2.

After great news from US this is fantastic from UK. My understanding is that it’s £500m on stuff we’re buying ➕ same(ish) value again on stuff from our inventory.

More Storm Shadow is really big bit but all very welcome & to enormous credit of Rishi Sunak & Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP. 🇺🇦🇬🇧

Absolutely not good enough.
If then, why not now?

The UK is to boost its defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030. That’s very important:
- funding crisis on new kit goes away (for now…)
- vital reinvestment in ammo stocks
- answer criticisms from former minister Rt Hon James Heappey MP + Tory back benchers
- challenge to Labour to match…

Ensuring Ukraine wins is the most important thing we can do for global peace and security.

That’s why we’re increasing our support - backing Ukraine with £500 million for military aid and delivering our largest-ever package of equipment.

Even more significant than the commitment to 2.5% of GDP by 2030 is the intention to put our Forces & industry on 'a war footing'. We have been calling for this for some time. But how serious are the Conservatives about making it happen - or The Labour Party for that matter?

This is indeed big news and very welcome - but why was this not in the recent Budget (where was not even mentioned) and why is it announced at a press conference in Poland and not in the UK Parliament? Any connection to Keir Starmer promising Labour would spend 2.5%?!
