Thanks to PM Donald Tusk for hosting us today for key discussions on deterrence & defence and support to Ukraine. #Poland makes #NATO stronger.
I also welcome PM Rishi Sunak’s major announcement on defence spending & #Ukraine support. Once again, the #UK is leading by example.
After great news from US this is fantastic from UK. My understanding is that it’s £500m on stuff we’re buying ➕ same(ish) value again on stuff from our inventory.
More Storm Shadow is really big bit but all very welcome & to enormous credit of Rishi Sunak & Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP. 🇺🇦🇬🇧
The UK is to boost its defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030. That’s very important:
- funding crisis on new kit goes away (for now…)
- vital reinvestment in ammo stocks
- answer criticisms from former minister Rt Hon James Heappey MP + Tory back benchers
- challenge to Labour to match…
Ensuring Ukraine wins is the most important thing we can do for global peace and security.
That’s why we’re increasing our support - backing Ukraine with £500 million for military aid and delivering our largest-ever package of equipment.

Even more significant than the commitment to 2.5% of GDP by 2030 is the intention to put our Forces & #defence industry on 'a war footing'. We have been calling for this for some time. But how serious are the Conservatives about making it happen - or The Labour Party for that matter?
BREAKING: UK is putting its defence industry on a 'war-footing' - investing £10 billion to ramp up production- as part of a plan to increase defence spending by 2.5% by 2030, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has declared.
This is a really big deal
