It was good to see this superb male Black Redstart busily feeding around the Sluice at Minsmere today, probably an early spring migrant, and very confiding, although I struggled to keep my camera steady in the breeze! BTO Suffolk Brigit Strawbridge SuffolkWildlifeTrust

A Snipe in close up from the West Scrape at Minsmere, Suffolk, showing its cryptic plumage of intricate patterns and textures that enable it to blend into the surrounding vegetation, especially when motionless, but in this case searching for worms! Graham Appleton

The sounds of spring are all around us, notably the loud, rapid 'drumming' sound frequently repeated by a male Great Spotted Woodpecker high up in a tree - females also 'drum' in reply, but usually less powerfully. From my garden in coastal Suffolk today (23rd March 2026).

The sounds of spring! Here's a Wren in full song at Minsmere, Suffolk, but having to compete with the noisy calls of Black-headed Gulls and Sandwich Terns on the Scrape, and also the 'whinnying' call of a Little Grebe close by in the marsh pools! (31st March 2026)
