Excellent! Who knew that people would travel by train, more sustainably, to visit our great National Parks UK? Well, @MEMRAP1 knows - aiming to reconnect directly Manchester, Peak District National Park & Derby. Peaks and Dales Railway: another great opportunity to reduce car (& HGV) use. #NetZero

The thing with levelling up is that the haves don't want it, because they've plenty. And they have a voice. Levelling up is about the have nots, because they do not have nearly enough. Nor do they have a voice. And that, my friends, is why levelling up will never, ever happen.

21st century resilience built into Network Rail infrastructure makes Peaks and Dales Railway the preferred future choice for travel via Peak District National Park for visitors and travellers between Derby and Manchester #NetZero #ClimateCrisis

Broomhead Environmental @MEMRAP1 @peak_chair Peak District National Park @CllrBarryLewis Julian Glover @Sion_McG East Midlands Railway (EMR) BBC East Midlands Peaks and Dales Railway Department for Transport "Through services" are vital in encouraging people out of their cars onto the railways. So it's great start to see: • Department for Transport being pressed to reinstate these services to/from Matlock; • over 20,000 people now calling for the *whole* Peaks and Dales Railway to be reopened.

@peak_chair Peak District National Park @CllrBarryLewis Julian Glover @Sion_McG East Midlands Railway (EMR) BBC East Midlands We *do* need to encourage car-free visits to Peak District National Park as +90% of 13.25m visitors p.a. coming by car really isn't sustainable. "Through Services" are vital in encouraging people out of their cars - hence the importance of reinstating the whole of Peaks and Dales Railway #NetZero

Solving this challenging set of inter-linked problems needs a core investment in an environmentally-led railway reinstatement: • improving access to the Park; • reconnecting Manchester & Derby/Nottingham with direct "through services"; • reducing congestion in Peak District National Park.

On the contrary, our study shows “net gain” and Environment Act compliance with an enhanced trail and upgraded SSSIs into Local Nature Recovery Networks plus powers for biodiversity gain endowed via Transport and Works Act, but unavailable to Peak District National Park

Our integrated rail+trail proposal uses existing infrastructure, connects isolated communities, offers one-off legal powers & brings inward investment.

Until this potentially high growth inter-regional corridor receives the rail infrastructure it merits, sustainable #NetZero travel for Manchester business and commuter travel, (Transport for the North Midlands Connect ) visitors to Peak District National Park and freight Network Rail remains out of reach

Great to see that NORTHERN 🚆 and @mpddindustry are collaborating to optimise use of the existing Peak District National Park rail network: railadvent.co.uk/2022/03/northe… Next in line should be re-instatement of Peaks and Dales Railway to raise modal shift to rail to a whole new level.

Exactly! Post-pandemic, and with HMG needing to demonstrate actual progress on two of its policy agendas - #NetZero & #LevellingUp - Department for Transport knows we need: 1. trains running when people want to travel; 2. many more places connected to the network. c.c. Rt Hon Sir Grant Shapps

Ian S Derbyshire (@iansderbyshire) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Peak District National Park Enabling visitors to come by train would ease the problems caused by c. 90% of visitors coming by car... Pleased to see another national park's rail connectivity newly improved with the recent reopening of the Okehampton line - with benefits all round. c.c. @MEMRAP1 #NetZero

HighPeak regrets that 58 (Macclesfield to Visit Buxton) unable to reach Bakewell and Chatsworth due to congestion on a top visitor day. Underlines need for joined up public transport policy in the Peak District National Park - Peaks and Dales Railway is central to future visitor access.

Ian S Derbyshire (@iansderbyshire) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Rail is the key to resolving the core sustainable access issue and the Big Transport Problem for Peak District National Park viz. c. 90% of 13.25m visitors p.a. come by car. There's one standout reason for that... And PDNPA knows that +24% would use public transport, if the option existed...

Ian S Derbyshire (@iansderbyshire) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Welcome news... but just a start. There is much, much more to do, and much more funding required Rt Hon Sir Grant Shapps to live up to the promise on the policy tin... and to help meet the big picture policy goals of #NetZero and #LevellingUp. #ModalShiftToRail

Ian S Derbyshire (@iansderbyshire) 's Twitter Profile Photo

@peak_chair @CllrBarryLewis Don't believe everything in the media! The BBC didn't research their story properly, as you'll see... Meantime, @MEMRAP1's campaign is picking up support precisely because it includes plans for both railway and trail - your Big Transport Problem only being soluble with both.

Ian S Derbyshire (@iansderbyshire) 's Twitter Profile Photo

How dare you, National Highways...?! It's not just what you've done - bad though that is. It's how you've done it - which is worse. Worse still, you've sought to defend the indefensible. This is why you cannot be trusted with our assets - the #HistoricalRailwaysEstate Enough!
