A final step within its life cycle! Last year, we surveyed the evolution of a #subglacial #void on the tongue of Rhone #Glacier in much detail. The thin roof of this cavity has now collapsed, exposing the bedrock. Such features locally accelerate the recession of the glacier.

Yesterday at #EGU24 I could present the results of my master thesis on modelling englacial temperatures 💻🧊. Thanks a lot for the tremendous interest in my poster. Also thanks Livia Jakob for capturing this photo. I honestly hadn’t noticed all those people in the back 😅.

I was able to do conduct a first test survey on #Rhone #glacier for my PhD project this week. A much greater field campaign with ice temperature measurements on several glaciers is planned for this summer. Stay tuned 👌🏔️

Snow and glacier meltwater are crucial water sources. A new Nature Water paper by Marit van Tiel et al. highlights the role of mountain groundwater, stating that neglecting meltwater-groundwater connectivity leads to inaccurate water predictions. 🌨️💧 nature.com/articles/s4422…

First stop: Sex Rouge Glacier (VD). 🌍📷 Our fieldwork kicked off with perfect bluebird conditions and breathtaking views. It's incredible to see how these glaciers now appear more like #remnants of #ice within rocky landscapes, far from the icy giants they once were.

2nd Stop: Glacier de Tortin (VS) ⛷️🌍 What’s usually a fluffy freeride paradise beneath Mont Fort looks very different in late August. ☀️ Rockfall deposits show permafrost decline in the cliffs above—a stark reminder of how quickly our landscapes are changing.

3rd Stop: Hohlaub Glacier at #SaasGrund 🏔️ Opposite the stunning Weissmies (4013m) and its imposing hanging glaciers. A bit harder to reach, but worth it! Massive #glacier #forefields and large moraines show the dramatic glacier retreat in the area. saasfee

4th Stop: Chessjengletscher at #SaasFee 🏔️ The imposing upper glacier plateau is now fully detached from the lower tongue. Another day of T-shirt weather at 3000m! 🥵🧊 Nevertheless, the glacier may survive a bit longer due to its north-facing position. #glaciology #saastal
