Let’s go and open a few doors. Or shall we leave that to Judith? Coming up at Howler @morelandcouncil’s Brunswick, Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle courtesy of BK Opera. And it starts with “Mister Dog” from Little Golden Books? Gotta think on this one.

Two music stands, a background screen and two strong performances from Michael Lampard and Zara Barrett. That, and Kym Dillon’s electronically manipulated and reimagined score brought a flood of mystery, chills and tension in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle for BK Opera. Nice work!

This might very well be what constitutes my opera plans for the rest the year. There’s broad scale appeal to dive into with San Francisco Opera, Victorian Opera, @GertrudeOpera’s Yarra Valley Opera Festival, LA Opera, BK Opera, Opera Australia and Pinchgut Opera.

Sung with passion and delivered on a shoestring, BK Opera’s La Boheme is a little ragged but it’s a stark reminder that operatic storytelling exists on so many scales. Not an ounce of snobbery to be seen here. Oh, and Belinda Dalton is a superbly cast Mimi well worth the ticket.
