But should we be worried that English bluebells are being chased out by Spanish bluebells? It’s not that simple — it seems English bluebells might actually be *better* at fertilising new plants.

Could you tell the difference?

Bluebells are an indicator of ancient woodland. But some of Sheffield’s woods may be even older — what those in the know call “primary wood”.

These are a remnant of the original wildwood that stretched across the country at the end of the last ice age.

What better way could you spend a cold but sunny spring morning, than going hunting for bluebells?

Sheffield’s network of ancient woodland make us one of the best places to see the shimmering carpets of blue 🧵

Massive beech tree collapses across main footpath in Sheffield's popular Graves Park ..... the result of long-term soil erosion, perhaps disease in the tree, & supersaturated soil meaning reduced traction on the steep slope. A recipe for problems. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
