The only plant whose flowers I have ever seen the Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa) feed on is goat willow. The flowers of both the male and female trees (the latter in the case of this one today) attract them in spring 🇸🇪

Whoop, whoop. Nightingales are back at our Alners Gorse reserve. It’s a top site for birds as well as butterflies and moths (over 700sp)

A bit cold and with only a few sunny intervals during a walk this morning. Only 3 butterflies seen, including a Speckled Wood showing off its magnificent underwing pattern against the white flowers; and a lovely little Grizzled Skipper at it hairy best.

The Corfu Butterfly Survey (CBS) is in its 4th year.
This enables us to see that the first sighting of the Southern Swallowtail (Papilio alexanor) were 2 weeks earlier this year than in any of the proceeding 3 years.

Hummingbird Hawkmoth on Honesty flowers in our garden just now! Very early in the year, and remarkable for Glos. There's been a scatter of sightings in the far south. Apols for poor photo, it was frenetic and claimed a pressing engagement elsewhere...
