During the pandemic, an unprecedented number of total excess deaths occurred in the US, with #AZ leading the way. A July 17 The New York Times article noted that deaths in the US were finally approaching expected levels in 2023. This chart shows the % of weekly excess deaths in AZ & US.

As with many other causes of death during the Covid pandemic, an excess of firearm deaths over pre-pandemic deaths was also clearly evident in #AZ and the U.S. The largest excess involved firearm homicides.
