Proleek Dolmen • Louth

Dating from the earlier part of Ireland's Neolithic period, this portal tomb consists of two large upright stones each measuring over 2 metres tall, and a back stone, supporting a massive capstone that is estimated to weigh over 40 tonnes.

The sprawling monastery of Kilmacduagh has developed much over the centuries. It was said to have been first founded by St Colmán in the 6-7th century, before going on to become one of the most important ecclesiastical centres in the region.

Fourknocks • Meath

The Neolithic passage tomb known as Fourknocks 1 has some distinctive megalithic art, with some parallels in Iberia & France.

Perhaps the most remarkable example is Orthostat C1, which some believe depicts an anthropomorphic figure.

This small gold and ruby pendant in the shape of a salamander, was recovered from the wreck of La Girona, a Spanish Armada ship that sank off the north Antrim coast, in the autumn of 1588. Only nine survived of the estimated 1,300 on board.
