A great op-ed that has it all: Kamala Harris coconut tree quotes, a scathing critique of the administration's sacrifice of freedom/safety for optics, and a refocus to the suffering in Gaza. The kids are alright.

White woman, world renowned academic, brutalised by cops in full view of video cameras and arrested. They still lied on court records about the event. Now think how often cops lie about those without similar privilege

Kudos to the Columbia Daily Spectator — smart, thoughtful, direct. Bravo.

Also: while I would prefer not to be cursed by God, I would also prefer university administrators not make their decisions on the basis of divine curses and questionable biblical exegesis?

You have to fuck up on a truly historic level to get the NYPD to say “even we think these were meaningless arrests.” They love meaningless arrests!

Today, Premal Dharia concludes our symposium on Jocelyn Simonson's *Radical Acts of Justice,* by discussing a crisis of purpose in public defense - whose workers must contend with the reality that a better world may obviate the need for their labor.

1/2 NEW: groundbreaking report w/RaceNYU: *Excessive Sentencers*. We use an innovative dataset -- appellate decisions -- to identify judges who imposed such lengthy prison sentences that the appellate court (2-5 judges) felt compelled to reduce them “in the interest of justice.”

Most people think public defense was invented by 9 men on the Supreme Court 60 years ago. They’re wrong. Public defense was invented by women 130 years ago. Read the full story from Emily Galvin-Almanza: tnvge.co/uvU3SdE

“No judge has ever lost their job setting bail on someone.”

A NYC judge whispered that. To a public defender. Before depriving their destitute client of freedom. This happens every day. Judges are intimidated to throw poor people in cages.

Thread on a history of intimidation:

Must read from two brilliant defense attorneys. The coercive power of media on judges leads to a lot more needless incarceration.

Incredibly proud of the op-ed we published in today’s NYDN about judicial intimidation!

James Crumbley was convicted yesterday for contributing to his son’s mass shooting just like his wife last month. This is your reminder that the people who will deal with this legal precedent long term are neither white nor the parents of mass shooters. motherjones.com/politics/2024/…

Happy to have co-written this piece on the recent, twisted view that transparency and accountability harms judicial independence, when in reality such scrutiny helps reveal the real sources and patterns of judicial intimidation.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in our subways, but militarizing our MTA will do far more harm than good. As a public defender I have seen firsthand that safety is achieved through providing stability. Carceral responses have proven time and time again not to serve us.
