European lightning deaths skew toward males (77.8%), teens, and SE Europe (especially Bulgaria), finds a #WeaClimateSoc study by researchers at ESSL. Of 1,282 recorded lightning fatalities over 2001-2020, many were farm workers or hikers. Read more: bit.ly/4lJ2LUr

#AAPIMonth Spotlight: Edmund Chang is a Professor at School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at SBU. Chang has served as an editor of the AMS Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences and helped organize an Atmospheric and Oceanic Fluid Dynamics conference. He received the AMS Editors' Award and was elected a Fellow.

A study published in #WeaClimateSoc by Sean Ernst et al found that survey respondents who described their feelings about extreme weather in positive terms (a positive "extreme weather affect") rated significantly higher on tornado preparedness. Read more: bit.ly/442d1Rp

Indian forecasting improvements are saving lives, according to a #WeaForecasting study. Tropical Cyclone Biparjoy’s 2023 strike on the Gujarati coast was very similar to a 1998 storm that caused 1,000+ deaths. Yet Biparjoy saw no deaths in Gujarat. More: bit.ly/43EUb0N
