7/11 Should we use LLMs as Search oracles? Using LLMs directly drops the notion of provenance (where did this come from?) You cannot verify truths not attribute the falsety to anyone. It's non-deterministic as well. Google does not want to be liable for saying false things.

So when the tech bros, likely the "winners" over in math & CS, hit something from the humanities/humanistic social sciences that they don't understand, they don't see expertise. They either see nothing or they see "nonsense" --- and miss their own ignorance. >>

Awesome example Alison Gopnik just sent me, from her 2022 NeurIPS talk, comparing 4-7 year old children and #GPT-3. A piece of paper rips, and the child/GPT has to figure out how to fix it. There’s no tape; it’s McGyver time: Use a bandage? Or scissors?

There is a real problem here. Scientists and researchers like me have no way to know what Bard, GPT4, or Sydney are trained on. Companies refuse to say. This matters, because training data is part of the core foundation on which models are built. Science relies on transparency.

With due respect, this is inaccurate. The letter doesn’t call for a ban on AI development. It calls for a ban on one aspect of one specific tool that is known to be unreliable and untrustworthy, in favor of research around making software that is more reliable and untrustworthy.
