🧵 At approximately 4:00pm yesterday, Democrats earned a majority in the Orange County Legislature for the first time in the nearly 60-year history of the chamber…despite finishing the election with nine out of 21 seats (a net of four from pre-election). Here’s how:

Major thanks and congrats to Matt Turnbull who was uniquely positioned to fill the sudden, quick vacancy in District 1. County Chair Zak Constantine delivered on key elements to help effectuate this new majority. Party leadership matters. A lot.

By “met briefly” he means “stopped for a photo op in the hallway”… Meanwhile, he hasn’t called or acknowledged the new Democratic chairwoman of the legislature and caucus leader who were elected 16 days ago! They’re waiting, Steve.

Yesterday the Democratic led Rules Committee in the Orange County Legislature advanced a resolution opposing ICE facilities in Orange County… Over Republican objections to “all that political and humanity stuff”

Republican Tom Faggione demanded to delete any condemnation of “inadequate treatment, lack of medical care, and inhumane treatment of detainees” in ICE facilities… Democrats fought back hard to take a tough stand, and won. A refreshing result of our new leadership.

Elizabeth Warren getting involved in Democratic Senate primaries (and going against Schumer/the DSCC picks) is fun to watch and I hope more of her colleagues do the same. It’s more proof the establishment has lost the juice.
