Late to the sad news of Sir Julian Seymour's death. Not only was he highly accomplished, but he was also very kind-hearted and extremely sound. Honoured to have known him. RIP 😢 thetimes.com/uk/obituaries/…

Can someone with Keir Starmer's ear please recommend him some new films? Instead of dystopian ones, maybe some of those nice old period dramas (no, not Bridgerton!)? Could evoke pleasanter visions and generally set in motion more wholesome trains of thought.

I had many favourites walking around the Cartier exhibition at the V&A, one of which was the exquisite tiara below. Came away feeling that society would be much more glamorous today if the wearing of tiaras were normalised! 😃 telegraph.co.uk/art/reviews/ca…

For UnHerd I've written an essay about the ongoing discord at the National Trust, and in particular the struggle for the soul of a peculiarly British institution: the aristocratic country house. unherd.com/2025/04/the-wa…

"The activists that scream and wail like children about everything from identity politics to climate change are in fact few in number, and generally uninterested in actually supporting the things they demand change in. So when institutions twist themselves into knots trying to

Fun fact of the day: St George (ቅዱስ ጊዮርጊስ in Geez/Amharic/Tigrinya) is also the patron saint of Ethiopia, with its most famous beer even named after him. Nice that my two countries share the same patron saint, so no need for split allegiances! 😅 Happy St George's Day!

It's incredible, isn't it, that the National Trust's management has got its priorities so wrong and is diverting so much scarce time, energy and resources to vanity projects like Blossom Watch. I wonder how much charity money has been spent on all this pointless advertising 🙄

"The National Trust has refused to light a historic beacon for the 80th anniversary of VE Day over wildfire fears." Sounds like a convenient excuse: surely the charity has the means to light a beacon responsibly without damaging the surrounding landscape! telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/05/0…

When so much of the cultural sector is deep in a crisis of self-belief - convinced that British history is inherently racist, sexist, imperialist or whatever - then holding them to account is incredibly important, so this should be a great project. Subscribe to the Substack

Those in power have shown "a weak appetite to stop the subversion of our heritage institutions...By contrast, there seems to be a thirst from the general public to learn more...and, crucially, to get more involved." Well worth subscribing, reading, and contributing to! 👇
