Sen. Joel Anderson’s sexual harassment of and threat of violence against our government relations director, Stephanie Roberson, is completely unacceptable and shows that he has no business holding any type of public office in California.

The event at which this incident took place was a work function, not a social function. Stephanie was doing her job. As a strong champion of worker protections, she like workers in all industries, deserves her workplace to be free from sexual harassment and threats of violence.

As a women of color, Supervisor Joel Anderson’s choice of words when he threatened violence against Stephanie didn’t go unnoticed by me. He used highly racialized language that stereotypes African American women. His comments clearly exposed his misogyny & blatant racism. #MeToo #TimesUp

The fact that Supervisor Joel Anderson would think for even one second that people would buy his pathetic claim of a “misunderstanding” highlights how pervasive and long accepted this type of shameful conduct has been in Sacramento and other institutions of power. #MeToo #TimesUp
