Today I realised that working in healthcare is a bit like the world of Harry Potter. Everyone focuses on the golden trio of doctors, surgeon, nurses but then when the world needs it Neville Longbottom, the neglected pharmacist, comes and beheads the fucking snake.

Prophet Muhammad’s role as mediator upon arriving to Medina was different than the prophetic role he had played in Mecca. In Medina, he served as a statesman. He, as Karen Armstrong put it, had to put God’s will into practice & create an egalitarian society. He did just that.

Prophet Muhammad engaged in *constructive* activities in moving from Mecca to Medina in 622. He created an environment of pluralism, established interdependence among Jews/Muslims/pagans, & shared the moral teachings of the Qur’an. He was always true to his righteous character.

The Qur’an (5:82) refers to Christians as “the nearest in love” to Muslims. Prophet Muhammad said that he is nearest of all people to Jesus & that the two are brothers. There are many more loving & unifying messages to focus on. Our similarities far outweigh our differences.

Near the end of his life, Prophet Muhammad gave his Farewell Sermon, in which he stressed the importance of many values. But there are two matters that stick out more than others: racial equality & women’s rights. He stressed these issues 1,388 years ago. That blows my mind.
