There is a lot of PD that focuses on curriculum. There is a lot of PD that focuses on how to use tools and platforms. Rarely is there PD that shows how you can run a student-centered, differentiated classroom using the tools and curriculum you have access to.

Math assessments should go beyond scoring correct/incorrect by analyzing the ways students approached the problems. We need to understand *how* students are thinking, not just if they can compute properly. #mtbos

If you are worried about teacher retention, remember, if you want to keep the best teachers, treat them like they are the best. Few teachers leave an environment where they feel valued, supported, appreciated, and treated like professionals. Few want to leave a winning team!

We need to think less about how we can convince educators to stay in a system that isn't working for many of them and more on the actions to improve the work environment and make the job more manageable.

When teachers say that leaving teaching is the hardest thing they ever had to do— believe them, because it is. Why? Because when a teacher leaves, you may see it just as someone leaving a job, but we see it as leaving something we love, and letting down students and families.

Colby Frantz So much emphasis (at least in math) is placed on binary measurements, Ss are either right or wrong, they either know it or they don’t. We’re working on shifting this toward q’s like: How did Ss think about this? What methods did they use? How has their thinking changed over time?

#AssetBased approaches offer a concrete way to address this. Still pays attention to the necessary next steps, but it’s framed as building on top of your many strengths, as opposed to playing whac-a-mole with all your weaknesses.

Yes! Communication in mathematics is essential! We no longer need students who can simply compute things quickly/accurately. We need great problem solvers and great communicators!

How to appreciate teachers: 1. Pay them what they're worth. 2. Show them respect. 3. Include their voice in decisions. 4. Give them a more manageable workload. 5. Give them proper resources. 6. Don't make them pay for their own supplies. #TeacherAppreciationWeek

Our goal is to gather evidence of how your students think through mathematical situations. We want to uncover info about the strategies/tools they use and the reasoning behind them. What do you notice about the following ways students approached this problem? 🧵1/ #MTBoS
