“The decline of the humanities is very worrying. It’s not because people are not interested in studying these subjects, but because we don’t encourage it."

Indeed, even here in Iraq, for example, the Iraqi government has stopped granting scholarships for students who are studying humanities subjects. Imagine 500 fully funded scholarships being offered to medicine, engineering, and science, but not a single one for the humanities.

It's #TabletTuesday! This tablet has the name of six witnesses who attest to the fact that an official Sin-bani has sworn an oath concerning the ox and sheep of the Amorites. It any of the animals go missing, that he is responsible.

Really pleased to see my research on an ancient #Sumerian #myth discussed on phys.org/news/2025-07-f… & elsewhere (I can't keep track!). We should all delight in more cunning foxes saving the day.

The real lesson of Tisha B'Av is to be realistic and know your place geopolitically. As much as the prophets blamed the Babylonian destruction on "our sins", the real reason was Zedekiah thought it was a bright idea to annoy Babylon. Same lesson later with Rome

My new piece in The Chronicle of Higher Education focuses on the ways in which university administrators knowingly undercut the humanities. Take a look! chronicle.com/article/theyre…

Ando’s numerous articles these past few months have shown that virtually all financial arguments for cutting humanities programs are lies. They are the cheapest programs at any university and frequently subsidize the others. It’s trustee and administrative ideology.
