Tonight Dr Cindy will teach us about the science of George Ellery Hale, who we often talk about as our founder and a builder of telescopes, but don't discuss enough as someone with an incredible research legacy in his own right.

George Ellery Hale's scientific legacy underpins all of modern astrophysics says Dr Cindy as we celebrate his sesquicentennial this week.

At 14, young George Ellery Hale convinced his dad that he needed a telescope to track the transit of Venus and participate in a global project allowed scientists to determine the distance from the Earth to the Sun.

.Dr Cindy explains how astronomers use spectroscopy to understand what the light from distant objects can tell us about their makeup. Our founder, George Ellery Hale, studied spectra of the Sun.

Hale's measurements of sunspots taught us fundamental things about stars, which eventually led astronomers to realize that there is an order to the way stars work, explains Dr Cindy showing off a diagram that she says is like "the periodic table of stars."
