Another year, another yearly wrap up of Joe things! In 2023 I caught 365 fish, 16 of which were new species for me, and 7 additional new subspecies. I ran 88.2 miles and I hiked 199.7 miles. Almost my highest fish count in a year, and narrowly my highest hiking year!

Can you hear it? 🎶Conk-la-ree!🎶 While red-winged blackbirds can be found year-round across much of North America, they're only spotted in parts of the north in the summer. February marks the start of migration which may last into May for some birds. 📷 Gordon Garcia

RIP to The Back Door, a Louisville institution. Was an honor to grace the wall by the foosball table for four years. Will savor the remnants of last Friday’s buffalo garlic wings for as long as I can.

Not cutie, but coati! White-nosed coatis (also called coatimundis) are cousins of raccoons that can be found in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and south through most of Central America. Photo: Alan Schmierer

Pallid sturgeon are an endangered species found in the Missouri & lower Mississippi Rivers. Unlike most fish, their skeleton is made of cartilage, not bone! They measure up to 5 ft & weigh up to 85 lbs. It takes 15 years to mature, but they may live to 100. 📷 Sam Stukel/USFWS

Minnesota is the first state in the nation to protect native rough fish! This includes fish that are native but were long mistreated. Now, anglers can catch and keep native rough fish under new legal limits with penalties to protect their populations. nature.ly/3WPMzX5

We are once again at one of the best times of the year: #GarWeek ! My appreciation for these living fossils has only grown over time. Chasing the toothy torpedos can be GARduous, but it’s well worth it
