Ari Davidow in the very serious "Computers and Typpography" compiled by Rosemary Sassoon (Intellect Books, Oxford, 1993, page 57) discusses slanting of Hebrew (should it be to the left or to the right?). Only there is a major problem…

Same problem here (same book, page 54): how would you feel if what you call "the most beautiful example of modern Hebrew typography" was rendered upside-down?

Perfect polytonic transcription of A Hard Day's Night, 1965, magazine Καρδιοχτύπι. Typeset in Linotype Didot except for some ϊ, for which a sans font was used. Notice the perfect use of long and short vowels: “φήλιν” (= feeling, long-short), “μη” (= me, long) “ιτ” (=it, short).

Deterioration of Greek language reached a new level: after the monotonic system we now have *fake polytonic*: a declined trademark word keeps the circumflex accent against all rules. οὖζο is normally οὔζου in the genitive, here it keeps the circumflex to be easily recognized…

Greek graphemic shop sign humor: κουλούρι is a traditional bretzel-like bread, «κουλούρ» (without the iota) sounds both “peasant-like” and “French-like” (therefore the “mon”), Latin letters are intermixed with Greek (bread-shaped) ΟΥ ligatures referring to Byzantine-like types.

My paper “Breaking Arabic: the creative inventiveness of Uyghur script reforms,” has been published: designregression.com/article/breaki… Exercise: find the four Uyghur ى graphemes in the image (an approximate transcription of “Design Regression”), solution in the paper!

Typography can have strong financial implications: French High Court service-public.fr/particuliers/a… states that warranty exclusions in insurance policies that are not typeset in "very visible characters" are *legally invalid*. Now we need a legal standard of typographical visibility.

Script revitalization can begin in the most unexpected places. These are Saudi Arabia recycling bins with instructions in the Dedanitic script. The Dedanitic script was in use during the second half of the first millennium BC in the oasis of Dadan (modern al-Ula).

On this web site (neaodos.gr/scorecard/), a multi-million-€ highway constructor in Greece, claims to have “corporate responsibility,” but the word “responsibility” is incorrectly spelled: a letter is missing (should be ὑπε*υ*θυνότητα). Is this a lapsus revelandi?

A humoristic sketch on TV involving gender-neutral writing and braille (and taking braille dots for middle dots and braille for a regional language ☺): grapholinguistics seen on TV! #Quotidien

Writing system confusion in Marioupol: this PRESS vehicle wanted to turn "PRESS" into something more Cyrillic (like "ПРЕСС"), why not turn the S into a Sigma? This is purely anecdotic, but also a sign of ubiquitous confusion in midst of a tragic situation…

The triumph of Jacobson's metalinguistic function of language: a woman holds a card on which the two words “two words” (два слова) are written, to see whether she will be arrested. Also the victory of pragmatics over semantics: the context provides the entire utterance's meaning.

(Aragon)
