CORDIO East Africa and WWF Madagascar were pleased to host a workshop focused on establishing a community-based natural resource management (CBRNM) learning network in the WIO. 🌊🌊🌊 The workshop was a success, delivering a roadmap for the development and implementation of the initiative!

This July 26 will be #MangrovesDay ! In 2019, the estimate of the total surface area of Madagascar’s mangroves was 390,853 hectares. That's why it's important for Madagascar to celebrate mangroves & the people working heart and soul for their conservation. Stay tuned!

WWF shared its catch monitoring & data collection system during a workshop on data management organized by the Ministry of Fisheries. This was to improve knowledge of production data collection methodology & to provide deconcentrated services with a common data collection system.

For #mangrovesday, a training session is hold to give communities who manage mangroves the capacity and skills they need to achieve sustainable management of this ecosystem. Specifically, the aim is to train local communities about the management transfer process and issues.

1/3 Reforestation of mangroves on #mangrovesday. Local communities, ministries, conservation NGOs and youth planted some 20,000 mangrove seedlings on the Kimony site, where the mangroves had stopped growing. Thanks to 2 new techniques, mangroves can now grow.

2/3 WWF and local mangrove management communities have demonstrated that it is possible to restore mangroves through these innovative technics : ✅ hydrological restoration: building canals for water drainage ✅topographical restoration: construction of 15cm small islands

Happy #mangrovesday! Morondava is celebrating the mangroves. Around 500 people got together for a big carnival in the Menabe region. Awareness-raising, dancing and entertainment around the theme of mangroves and climate change throughout the town. Pictures of the event.

WWF Madagascar's stand showcased innovative technologies for monitoring & controlling mangrove restoration sites. 3 drones of different sizes were presented. This will enable mangroves to be mapped, pressures to be monitored and restoration success rates to be measured.

WWF presented the “Differential Global Positioning System”, a tool to obtain accurate database in order to create a hydrological & topographical profile of restoration sites. This will also serve to give instructions on the actions to be taken for hydrological and restoration.

Judicael Rakotondrazafy shared WWF's experience using the “Climate-Smart Mangroves” tool, designed to help practitioners integrate climate change considerations into the decision-making process and management of mangrove conservation: protection, restoration & sustainable use.
