Credit to Jalen Hurts โ€” tremendous lesson for kids out there, benched at halftime of the national title game for Tua, refuses to publicly pout, commits himself to working his ass off to get better. And now heโ€™s a Super Bowl champion quarterback. Phenomenal comeback & resilience.

A basic rule: - In the government, unless the law allows it, you can't do it. - Outside government (for citizens/companies), unless there's a law disallowing it, you can do it. Our system constrains government and defaults to freedom for everyone else. That's healthy.

One thing to note about this - it's not something that can be done by working on the edges of these systems (ie, website redesign). A lot of these systems are just complicated, and would need to be substantially changed to make them legible.

538 gave us the best single tool I've seen to demonstrate the power of gerrymandering: projects.fivethirtyeight.com/redistricting-โ€ฆ I hope this stays up, or someone has a tool that's as good to see the power of legislative lines.

The House reconciliation bill threatens to explode deficits and interest costs. Deficits will grow past $3 trillion a year. Interest costs will more than double to $2 trillion. In 2019, deficits were $1 trillion and interest $300 billion! 4/5

Imaginary deficit cutting (nevermind balancing the budget) in 6 years (without a CBO score, to boot) isn't real. Raising the deficit now is real. When the debt bomb goes off, this will be one of the reasons why.

I'm not sure there is anything we can do to impact AI's acceleration of the dumbing down of intellectual discourse in wider society. But we can absolutely have an impact in our own circles and especially on our families.

The law today is the integral of a lots of contradictory half-measures that cause many bad outcomes. We STILL need to update old law that isn't working - but there's no political reward in it. Social media pushes us to give our attention to conflict instead. Not sure solution.

The media (institutional and social): "Big development! Breaking news!" (discovery that it didn't actually happen) Media: "Stunning reversal! What drama!" The attention economy has a market failure and rewards sensational claims without basic research.

We don't need to increase the deficit even more. We don't have to spend money we don't have. We don't have to massively expand the national debt, creating a more unsustainable interest burden. All of these are choices.

The rot isn't all recent. "When you try to build a single jet to meet the multi-role needs of at least 15 separate militaries, while also being a global jobs program and political patronage scheme, you get a $2 trillion albatross."

Liars and cheats convince themselves that everyone else must be doing the same, depending on us not holding them to higher expectations. Don't let those people create a world that expects and gives a pass to bad behavior.
