I agree that a very strong case could be made for the 1980s, but I'm arguing that the extraordinary initial flowering was in that earlier period

Throw vintage quality into the mix and maybe the another decade would be in the lead.

Average quality in the 1980s was still poor and in the 1970s, surely poorer.

Told me in the late '50's (I think) was involved in technical extension - they went around McLaren Vale with a pH meter in wooden box, testing for winemakers. Napa would do well to follow suit.
