āItās taken me a while to realise that itās not a good idea for someone like me (black) to express disagreement or unhappiness. To fit in, they expect gratitude and obedience. Things escalate fast for black staff otherwise. We donāt have the privilege to be our authentic self.ā
āDrunk deputy headteacher to me on last day of term āyou know youāre more likely to be taken more seriously if you toned down the lipstick & African patterns on your dresses. Everyone knows youāre proud to be black but you donāt have to be shouty about itā. I kept quiet.
āIāve been thinking about my HoDās leaving speech for me last week in which she said āat interview we had no idea this quiet little Indian girl would be a powerhouse when it came to behaviour managementā. Headteacher said it was a compliment & not drawing on racial stereotypesā¦ā
