Day 1 - Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005)  “During the racially contentious period in the late '60s, [Chisholm] became the 1st Black woman elected to Congress, representing NY’s 12th District from 1969-1983. In 1972, she became the 1st Democratic Party woman to run for president.”

Bessie Coleman was an early American civil aviator. She was the first African-American woman to hold a pilot license and is the earliest known Black person to earn an international pilot’s license.

Day 5 - Jesse Owens (1913-1980)  “In 1936, Owens set the world record in the long jump in Berlin. He won 4 gold medals in the 100, 200, 100 relay and other events off the track. In 1976, Owens received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1990.”

James Baldwin was a writer and civil rights activist who is best known for his semi-autobiographical novels and plays that center on race and politics.

Daisy Bates is an African American civil rights activist and newspaper publisher. Through her newspaper, Bates documented the battle to end segregation in Arkansas. For her amazing career in social activism, we celebrate her as an American hero.

Jericho Brown is the author of The Tradition winner of the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and a finalist for the 2019 National Book Award in Poetry; The New Testament which received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, in addition to being named one of the best books of the year.

Billie Holiday was an American jazz and swing music singer. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and music partner, Lester Young, Holiday made a significant contribution to jazz music and pop singing.

Frederick McKinley Jones was an American inventor, entrepreneur, engineer, winner of the National Medal of Technology, and an inductee of the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Jones innovated mobile refrigeration technology.
