The Narrative Projects team The New York Times spent the best part of a year on this. We visited Pasadena, where Octavia grew up, read all of her books, went to the Afrofuturist room at the MET, and Into the Black Fantastic in London

I was midway through writing a sci-fi novel when I discovered her work, and it's forever changed my practice. Octavia writes with such grace, intentionality, and deep research. As Lynell puts it, “She led the way for the next generation of Black readers and thinkers” ✨

So many people have worked to ensure her legacy over the years. This piece captures some of those efforts — it pays homage the worlds that she inhabited, growing up in California and beyond.
